The Aug. 10 market decline of almost 200 points on the Dow Jones Industrial Average seemed to confirm the dire view of the world and egged on the talk-show pundits.

In other words, some investors decided Aug. 10 was a reasonable time to ditch their stock holdings, and it had little to do with the potential start of another war on the Korean Peninsula.

About the only economic news of real consequence this week was Friday's inflation report, which showed surprisingly low inflation for the month of July on both a month-to-month and year-over-year basis. In other news, data from the National Federation of Independent Business suggested that concerns about finding workers have reached a new recovery high.

This morning we got the CPI numbers for July, and they show that inflation is still quite low.

The decline during March was a clear outlier but the four following months haven’t seen much an in uptick.

NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) shares sold off more than 5% in the first hour of Friday's U.S. session, hitting a four-week low at $153.65 after the company reported a strong quarter but disappointed the momentum crowd with lower-than-expected guidance.

It has been unwise to bet against NVIDIA in 2017 despite 2016's parabolic uptrend, but gains have slowed considerably in recent months, with the stock now trading at the same level it did in early June.

Despite recent struggles with falling customer traffic, heading into Chuy's Holdings ' (NASDAQ: CHUY) second-quarter earnings report, the Tex-Mex chain was still guiding for positive full-year 2017 comparable-restaurant sales growth numbers. Chuy's is seeing pressure on a number of fronts, including labor cost inflation, higher commodity costs, higher occupancy costs in its newer, larger markets, and -- given the large number of new stores its opened recently -- a bunch of new restaurants that just haven't achieved normal margin yet.

Venezuela by the Numbers: Economy and Demographics [-0.02]

According to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) World Economic Outlook published in April, Venezuela’s gross domestic product (GDP) declined by 18% year over year in 2016.

The country’s estimated 2016 GDP was $333.7 billion, or about $15,000 per capita, according to the CIA World Factbook.
